The results are in for the April 19 polling and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican contender Donald Trump have won the vote of New Yorkers.

Democratic candidate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has bid goodbye to his winning streak as Clinton emerges as the victor in Tuesday's primary. Clinton garnered 57.9 percent of the votes while her rival got 42.1 percent, crushing Sanders' hope of winning the nomination.

Clinton's victory in New York had been predicted by previous polls, but supporters of Sanders held on to hope that he could win the state primary. The Hill reported that Clinton had repeatedly told New York residents during her campaigns that she supported them when she was still in the Senate and she hoped she would also get their support in return. Apparently, that's what happened.

Despite losing the nomination, Sanders plans to stay on the race, Oregon Live reported. His campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, told MSNBC that he will not abandon the campaign even if his rival secures the nomination.

According to CNN, a Democrat will need 2,383 delegates to secure the nomination, and Clinton had 1,930 while Sanders got a total of 1,223.

Meanwhile, over to the Republican side, Trump also won the support of New York voters, which was not much of a surprise considering polls showed he was the strongest candidate in the state. According to the New York Times, the real estate billionaire got a whopping 60.5 percent of the vote. John Kasich follows far behind with 25.1 percent, while Ted Cruz only had 14.5 percent.

This was an important win for Trump, who had lost his momentum recently after Cruz defeated him in Wisconsin.

Trump said at Trump Tower in Manhattan that people of New York know him the best and he described getting the support of the residents as "just incredible."

Next week, on April 26, the race continues with the Connecticut primary.
