2017 Lincoln Continental news: Sedan debuts Jan 2016; car is more about luxury and comfort than performance

The Lincoln Continental was unveiled during the 2015 New York Auto Show as a concept car. Soon after its debut, Lincoln ramped up production for the final version of the luxury sedan. The company has revealed that the 2017 Lincoln Continental will be unveiled during the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Lincoln's flagship Continental is set to replace the Lincoln MKS sedan. While Lincoln has adopted a new MK nomenclature system for its new releases, the company will be retaining the classic Continental nameplate. The Continental first debuted in 1939 and was once touted as one of "the most beautiful cars of all time." It is also Lincoln's top selling vehicle.

Car and Driver spoke to Lincoln's brand marketing manager, Imran Jalal, who revealed that the company is in the process of rejuvenating their brand in the hopes of attracting new and younger customers.

Lincoln's flagship luxury sedan will have a front-wheel drive platform, but an all-wheel-drive version will be available. Unfortunately, there will be no hybrid models planned for the near future.

When the Lincoln Continental concept was unveiled, it was met with a positive and promising response, Jalal noted. Based on the concept car, the 2017 production-ready model will feature an upscale front fascia featuring a new "waterfall" aluminum mesh grille and unique LED matrix headlamps with laser-assist high beams.

The 2017 Lincoln Continental will also feature E-latch door handles, where doors pop open at the touch of a button and a SPD SmartGlass roof that automatically tints itself with the press of a button. Furthermore, the luxury sedan comes with full-width tail lamps and 21-inch polished aluminum-painted wheels.

While Lincoln has yet to release powertrain details, the Continental sedan may come with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. According to Jalal, the company's priority is producing a comfortable and luxurious new ride. "We have high-performance engines, but we are going for a luxurious feeling rather than sportiness," he revealed.

More details, including pricing and release date, will be announced closer to its debut next year.
