The HTC One M7, which has completed 24 months of being on the market, will not be receiving the Android Lollipop 5.1 update, according to Mo Versi, HTC's Vice President (Product Management). Mo Versi informed a Twitter user that the company was planning to update the Google Play edition version of the One M7, but not the regular model for which the software would be discontinued. This has come as a big disappointment for One M7 users, who were hoping that Android 5.1 Lollipop would fix some of the bugs introduced by Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop had marked a major upgrade for Android users and introduced some major design changes. HTC had issued the Android 5.0 Lollipop update as an OTA release for the One M7 under the T-Mobile subscription, which brought in some new features for the device, like a refreshed Recent Apps page, ability to do a search right off the Settings app and new notifications features. However, given the number of bugs and other performance issues accompanying the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, One M7 users had been keenly awaiting Android 5.1 on their devices, as it is a major stability update to fix bugs found in the earlier version.

Mo Versi justified HTC's decision to stop providing any further Android updates for the regular One M7 on the grounds that the company had been updating the device for almost two years now. Although Android OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) partners generally have a statuary contract of 18 months with Google for delivering software update services to their flagship smartphones, HTC offers an additional six months of service.

However, the One M7 Google Play edition model will receive the Android Lollipop 5.1 update next month, as HTC has said that it plans to release the update early April, as well as get all future updates. Google is likely to continue providing support to One M7 Google Play edition devices at least until the end of 2015, but what could happen after that is anybody's guess.
