Apple iPhone 6 release date: Long queues in Australia, necessary license missing for China launch

The arrival of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the market today signals three things: long queues, proliferation of online reviews, and massive revenue for Apple, Inc.

The larger and thinner iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus go on sale around the world, with the land "Down Under" getting the first bite of the new Apple flagship.

"Apple kicked off sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in Australia at 8 am in Sydney (6 pm Thursday evening Eastern Time) to large crowds. One of the people waiting in line who has been at the head for multiple launches said there were more than 1,000 people and far outnumbered the iPhone 5 launch two years ago," Forbes reported.

Apple's Head of Retail and Online Stores worldwide is currently in Sydney, Australia to oversee the launch in the country, and to welcome the first customers at a flagship store on George Street.

"Apple customers wanted bigger screens and now they have finally done it," said Shane Gray, who had lined up for 15 hours on the sidewalk with his wife and young son.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was expected to show up in Palo Alto, Calif., in time for the U.S. release.

The Australian leg is just an indication of what is to come for Sept. 19 around the globe, especially after the record-breaking 4 million pre-orders that Apple reported 24 hours after Cook unveiled the latest iPhone models during its Sept. 9 Cupertino event.

This was double the quantity of iPhone 5 pre-orders two years ago.

The numbers exclude the Chinese market, however, as Apple is still waiting for a critical license from authorities before iPhone 6 models can hit the shelves in the country.

"The official Xinhua news agency said on Thursday that Apple's new iPhone had been given regulatory approval for use on domestic frequencies, but the phone cannot be sold in China until a key network license is granted. The Xinhua report did not indicate when this is likely to happen," Reuters reported.

Apple iPhone 6 sports a 4.7-inch screen, while the bigger iPhone 6 Plus has 5.5-inch display.
