Apple Watch 2 release date, specs: September release likely?

(Reuters/Beck Diefenbach)Apple Watch 2 is expected to debut in September.

Fans of wearable devices are looking forward to the release of a new Apple Watch. The current model was released back in 2015 and people are now waiting for the Cupertino tech giant to introduce a new iteration. However, Apple has not confirmed anything yet, which is why rumors about the smartwatch's specs, features and release date are making the rounds.

In a June report from DigiTimes, it was mentioned that there has been a higher demand for the Apple Watch 2 than initially thought. Sources for the publication revealed that around two million units of the wearable device could be distributed every month. The shipment of parts and chips for the upcoming watch is also said to begin by the third quarter of this year.

Given a projected Q3 release, it is now widely speculated that Apple Watch 2 will arrive in September. If proven to be true, it is also likely that the smart watch will be released alongside other Apple products like the new iPhone 7.

As for the specs, it is easily assumed that the next-generation smart watch from Apple will carry significant upgrades in specifications. In the recent months, it is reported that Apple will soon follow the footsteps of Samsung's and LG's wearable, in which the smart watch will have its own connectivity. This means that the watch will not depend on the connection of an iPhone and will be able to send or receive messages via its own LTE connection.

Meanwhile, an earlier report from Apple Insider also mentioned that the next smart watch will be called Apple Watch S. It will have the same look as the current model, but only has changes to its power and features. The report also detailed that there will be no major design changes until next year.

Also, it is rumored that the watch will soon be able to take selfies as well as make quality FaceTime video calls. Other rumored specs include an ARM Cortex A32 chipset, a more powerful battery and a built-in GPS connectivity.
