Apple Watch 2 release date, specs rumors: wearable expected to feature different type of display

(Apple)The Apple Watch 2 may feature a new kind of display

Exactly how different the Apple Watch 2 will be from its predecessor remains to be seen, though a new rumor is already hinting that the two smartwatches will vary in at least one significant way.

According to a new report from Digitimes, the two wearables will differ significantly in terms of their displays.

Whereas the Apple Watch featured the so-called "glass on glass" display, Apple is apparently moving on from that and will now utilize One Glass Solution (OGS) technology for their upcoming wearable.

It's unclear exactly what kind of impact shifting from "glass on glass" to OGS will have on the final product, though rumors have indicated that the change could manifest itself in a few different ways.

First off, the potential elimination of another layer of material could mean that the Apple Watch 2 will be able to sport a significantly thinner display, though whether that opens the door for more design changes to be made is unclear.

As Slash Gear noted, one thing the OGS display could allow Apple to do is to produce a lighter smartwatch.

Alternatively, AppleInsider put forth the possibility that the extra space freed up by going with the new display could enable Apple to fit a larger battery inside the new smartwatch, thus allowing it to stay in service for longer.

For now, Apple has yet to address any of the latest rumors related to their rumored smartwatch, though people may start hearing more official details about it not too long from now.

According to an earlier report also coming from Digitimes, the next-generation wearable is expected to make its debut sometime this fall.

Specifically, the recent report from the web site indicated that the new smartwatch may be unveiled either in September or in October.

If an announcement really is coming within the next couple of months, then more details about the Apple Watch 2 may soon start to trickle out as well.
