Apple Watch 2 release date, features: to come with LG P-OLED display; may be out in April 2016

Even as all the dust of the just launched Apple Watch is yet to settle down, reports of its second variant have begun doing the rounds, claiming that LG will remain Apple's sole display supplier for the next-gen Apple Watch, which could be released in April 2016. LG Display dominates the smartwatch display market and is the sole manufacturer of plastic-organic light emitting diode or P-OLED panels for the Apple Watch, which helped the Korean company record revenues of over $186 million in Q1 2015.

The P-OLED display technology allows for thin bezels and a variety of shapes, making it preferable for use in wearable devices like smartwatches. LG Display's high-quality P-OLED panels at good yield rates have made the company a top choice among other suppliers. LG's P-OLED displays make the Apple Watch more flexible and energy efficient, due to its bending characteristics, low battery consumption and ability to offer a higher-resolution than traditional LCD screens. Apple also covers LG's P-OLED display screen in the Apple Watch with sapphire in order to protect it from bumps and scratches.

New reports coming out of South Korea now claim that Apple and LG have decided to continue with their partnership for the development of the second gen Apple Watch. LG Display will reportedly remain the sole display supplier for Apple Watch 2, which is likely to be released in April 2016. By choosing LG Display as the sole display supplier for the second gen Apple Watch, Apple has defied its own multi-vendor policy.

But Apple's decision to appoint LG as the sole supplier of panels for the Apple Watch has come after a careful selection process. The decision has been based on LG's ability to manufacture high-quality screens in the least time possible time, which means that Apple doesn't have to worry about panel shortages or possible delays. Apple Watch 2 will also house the same P-OLED display technology from LG and could hit the shelves sometime in April 2016.
