The countdown has begun, as Apple, Inc. announces that its smartwatch bet, Apple Watch, will get a release date for the Spring of 2015. Rumors hint that the launch will come just in time for the Valentine season.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has revealed a number of details surrounding the wrist-wearable Apple Watch's specs, style and design, but Apple did not thoroughly discuss pricing. The entry-level model costing $350 is the only official appraisal as of this time.

A recent report posted by a French blogsite has stirred public interest, mentioning of a solid gold Apple Watch. According to the article, Apple is set to unveil a super fancy 18K solid gold edition that could sell somewhere between $4,000 and $5,000.

In September, TechCrunch quoted a jewelry source that is familiar with the project, saying that the gilded model will hit store shelves in January 2015, with a tag price of $1,200.

Several people have reacted negatively to what they think is an overpriced timepiece. However, TIME has provided a palpable defense as to why the pricing would be fair.

"A quick perusal of Google Shopping reveals that full-18K luxury watches (not the merely gold-plated timepieces) tend to run upwards of $10,000, and can be as much as $30,000, though many of these watches use more gold than the Apple Watch will. That aside, 18K gold is expensive, and despite all its magic, Apple can't simply will the material's price to go down—as of this writing, one ounce of 18K gold is worth roughly $858," the Nov. 5 article writes.

While many Swiss watchmakers have downplayed competition from the upcoming smartwatches, there is no denying that their approach and technology could nab substantial sales.

Apple Senior VP for Design, Jony Ive has implied Apple could take on Rolex. However, many retailers and pundits are not totally sold out to this idea.

"Even if Apple redefines the watch category, it could be a slug-fest," Susana Calla of Forbes stated.
