Through Twitter, the publishers of hit game BioShock have announced that the first installment of BioShock may be downloaded directly as an iOS app from iTunes by summer. Although no exact released date was mentioned, the BioShock game should join the iTunes games catalog before August ends.

The 2007 version of BioShock will be released as a paid iOS app, or as a premium app, on iTunes.

First released for iPhone users in 2008, BioShock for Apple devices will feature the same dynamic gaming environment but with iPhone-compatible graphics.

Along with the announcemnt, 2K Games, noted that only a select few of Apple devices can download the first installment of BioShock, including the iPad Air, iPad 4, iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s.

BioShock for iOS will also come with digital art books, a feature achievement boards, leaderboards, and optimized on-screen control keys, as seen on the game-turned-app's official trailer.

Set in the 1960's, the original BioShock was a first-person shooter game in the same style as the popular Halo and Counter-Strike. BioShock marries steampunk and futuristic environments to create a brand new gaming environment.

First released in 2007, BioShock has since received awards and nods from various media outlets such as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTAS.

It was patterned after the very-similar System Shock 2 which was released in 1999 by the same game designer, Ken Levine.
