As the Brooklyn Nets get eliminated from playoff contention, two of their best players in center Brook Lopez and forward Thaddeus Young will no longer see action with a few more games left in their regular season schedule.

According to ESPN,  Brooklyn's interim head coach Tony Brown said Sunday that Lopez and Young are shut down for the remainder of the season.

For the majority of the 2015-16 National Basketball Association (NBA) regular season, the Nets have dwelled in the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings together with the lowly Philadelphia 76ers. Currently, they are second to the last in the conference with a 21-56 record, also riding a five game losing streak. Since the Nets transferred to Brooklyn before the 2012-13 season, this season will be the first time the franchise will not see action in the playoffs.

Because of the unfortunate circumstances, they might as well rest Lopez and Young, who can be considered as the Nets' leaders this season.

In 73 games played and started, Lopez averaged 20.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, two assists, and 1.7 blocks, in 33.7 minutes played per outing.

Meanwhile, Young also played and started in the same number of games, having 15.1 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest.

Lopez is Brooklyn's leader in scoring and blocking this season. Young, on the other hand, is the team's no. 1 player in rebounding and steals.

The remaining five games for the Nets are not easier as they will face top contenders in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn goes on a three-game road trip which features matchups with the Washington Wizards (Wednesday), Charlotte Hornets (Friday), and the Indiana Pacers (Sunday). After a tough stretch, the Nets return to the Barclays Center for a two-game home stand to finish the season. The first home game is a rematch with the Wizards, followed by a clash with the Toronto Raptors.
