Dallas Cowboys free agency, trade rumors 2016: Team's search for Tony Romo's backup continues

(Reuters/Eric Hartline/USA TODAY Sports)The Dallas Cowboys are searching for franchise quarterback Tony Romo's backup.

The Dallas Cowboys are in search of a new backup quarterback this off-season and they are considering a number of ways to add one. It even included signing Nick Foles who recently parted ways with the Los Angeles Rams.

Dallas is facing a familiar foe as of the moment - the injury bug. Earlier this week, the Cowboys lost a backup passer in Kellen Moore, who suffered an ankle injury. The 27-year-old is expected to be sidlined for 3-4 months.

This is bad news for the Cowboys who last season had a horrible campaign because of health setbacks.

However, the Cowboys are looking to address the issue immediately and one of their options was to ink Foles.

Foles became an unrestricted free agent last week after completing a buyout of his pact with the Rams. The 27-year-old was available on the market and the Cowboys had the chance to bring him in to play second fiddle to franchise quarterback Tony Romo.

Unfortunately, the Kansas City Chiefs entered the frame and NFL.com reported that they already reached an agreement with Foles.

Now that Foles is no longer available, the Cowboys might complete a trade to have a second stringer to Romo.

ESPN suggested in its report that the Cleveland Browns' Josh McCown and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Mike Glennon could be choices for Dallas.

Both McCown and Glennon are losing significance with their respective teams because younger passers are emerging.

The Cowboys could use either of the two as Romo's backup, especially McCown. The 37-year-old can also take the starting job and has done that numerous times in his long career in the NFL.

Dallas is practicing caution this off-season, to prevent a repeat of the 2015 season.

In the Cowboys' previous campaign, injuries ravaged them and it affected the entire team big time as it finished last in the National Football Conference (NFC) East by winning only four games.
