Dallas Cowboys injury, roster news 2016: Tony Romo fractures back

It is déjà vu for the Dallas Cowboys as franchise quarterback Tony Romo is again sidelined after injuring his back in a preseason game Thursday versus the Seattle Seahawks.

(Reuters/Jerome Miron/USA TODAY Sports)Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) leaves the game with an injury during the second half of an NFL game against the Carolina Panthers on Thanksgiving at AT&T Stadium.

According to ESPN's report, the health setback could keep Romo off the field for 6-10 weeks. It was also mentioned that the injury is a "compression fracture of the L1 vertebra."

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett remains positive, not closing the doors on the possibility of Romo starting in their 2016 season opener versus division rivals the New York Giants on September 11. If the 36-year-old veteran passer cannot fulfill this job, rookie Dak Prescott will be taking over.

This is not the news the Cowboys wanted with only a few weeks before the new season opens.

In the 2015 season, injuries plagued the Cowboys which led to them having a horrible 4-12 record and finishing last in the National Football Conference (NFC) East, a division they ruled in the 2014 season.

A huge part of Dallas' problems last season was Romo's clavicle injury which he intially suffered in their second outing. This made him miss 12 games in the Cowboys' previous campaign.

During the off-season, Romo worked his way to recovery and managed to return to a hundred percent. Unfortunately, he needs to miss action again because of the recent back woe sustained.

In a report by SportsDay, it was mentioned that Romo is currently wearing a back brace, with Garrett saying: "He just going to start getting into rehab and part of his rehab is he's going to be wearing a back brace for now. So you'll see him around wearing that."

Garrett then preached about taking things day by day, hoping for progress regarding Romo.

Surely the Cowboys wanted to bounce back in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season but the accomplishment of that goal may be delayed with Romo hurt.
