Dallas Cowboys trade rumors 2016: Search for Dak Prescott's backup continues

Because of Tony Romo's recent back fracture, the Dallas Cowboys are now seeking for a backup to their temporary starting quarterback Dak Prescott. Aside from the free agents on the market, they may also consider trading and there are great options if they go that way.

In a report by The Inquisitr, the top two names mentioned were the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick and Geno Smith of the New York Jets.

Kaepernick is not new to the trading block. Earlier in the off-season, he was linked and even met with the Denver Broncos. However, he stayed with the 49ers and had good performances in camp as he continued to bounce back from the injuries he dealt with last season.

Unfortunately, there are rumors that the 49ers are expected to cut Kaepernick, not because of the recent national anthem issue he is involved in, it is just that he is no longer the starting passer they once had.

If that is the case, all the Cowboys need to do is wait for the 49ers to part ways with Kaepernick, and once he is available, they can ink him to a contract.

Another option is Smith, who is the second stringer at quarterback for the Jets behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Smith is a former starter but that job was nabbed by Fitzpatrick who performed splendidly in the 2015 season. For now, it is unlikely for New York to deal away the 25-year-old because he remains to be a quality quarterback.

But if Dallas can put up a great offer, the Jets might be forced to give up Smith.

As of the moment, the Cowboys' search for a no. 2 passer continues. According to ESPN's report, they met with Austin Davis Wednesday but no deal was reached.

Davis was recently released by the Cleveland Browns and despite having no agreement, he could still be an option for Dallas.
