"Destiny 2" will likely be one of the most talked about game releases of next year, but unlike the currently available installment of the franchise, last-gen players may no longer be able to play the sequel unless they upgrade as well.

As "Destiny" players likely already know, the upcoming "Rise of Iron" expansion will be a big one, adding plenty of new features that figure to further enhance the experience of playing the game.

Unfortunately for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners, they won't be able to see these new features in the game themselves, as "Rise of Iron" will only be released for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Bungie has indicated that players will still be able to enjoy "Destiny" on last-gen consoles, though their journeys will run through what the developer has termed as a "separate path" starting this fall.

Considering how players who will opt to stick with their last-gen consoles will likely be missing out on heaps of new content, it's now worth wondering if they too will not be able to enjoy "Destiny 2" unless they decide to start playing on PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones.

For now, it's still unclear exactly what the future holds for fans of the franchise who will opt to stick with their older consoles, though they should have more clarity soon enough.

Earlier this year, Bungie confirmed that "Destiny 2" will indeed be coming in 2017, though exactly when the sequel would be released was not shared.

According to PC Advisor UK, it's possible that Bungie will again opt to launch the new game in September just as they did for the franchise's original offering.

With any luck, more details regarding the new features that will be included in "Destiny 2" as well as its exact release date and platforms will be made available soon, possibly at around the same time that players can get their hands on the "Rise of Iron" expansion.
