Evolution's PS4-exclusive car racing game Driveclub is off to a rocky start, with server issues from release date, preventing players from connecting online and with mixed reviews from the community.

Developer Paul "Rushy" Rustchynsky offered a lengthy explanation to raging players.

"We are sorry if you are having a hard time getting online as we know many of you are. Please be aware that the game will automatically keep trying to connect you. Once you're online, you should have no further problems during your session," Driveclub writes on its Facebook Page.

Explaining further, it says, "In order to help all DRIVECLUB players who have the game already, we're temporarily holding back the PS Plus Edition and the My DRIVECLUB app to ease the load and traffic to the servers. This should give players a better chance of connecting to the game servers and, once the servers are operating well, we'll be sure to let you know when the PS Plus Edition and My DRIVECLUB app will be available to download."

The developers have promised to attend to these connectivity impediments as soon as possible.

"During the next 24hrs we are running essential diagnostics to help us improve the performance of the servers. This may disrupt online play for you when you do get connected," Driveclub appealed to fans via Facebook.

Apart from this setback, Sony is also not getting the critical reception that they had anticipated for Driveclub.

"The AI seems to punt you off the track at every available opportunity, and Forza has it beat when it comes to customization and handling," Top Gear commented.

The Independent's Jack De Menezes praised the spectacular visual displays of the video game, but pointed out the lack of depth in the gameplay.

"The actual gameplay is a half-breed of arcade and simulation. You're able to jam the brakes on with the car sideways and get straight back on the throttle mid-corner in a rather unrealistic fashion, but every so often this technique will suddenly bite you, and you'll end up in the wall, trees or as we found out, airborne," he said.

In terms of sales, PS4 has taken an edge over Xbox One, but the case may be different in the racing department, with Xbox-exclusive Forza Horizon 2 which launched Sept. 30 in the US getting better reviews versus PS4's Driveclub.
