Facebook news: Social media platform experiences battery drain in iOS; patch already in the works, says spokesperson

Smartphones have changed the way everybody lives: Internet capability has allowed people to communicate without wasting airtime minutes, to organise calendar invites, and even to reach out via different social media platforms. But smartphones are only as good as their battery lasts. And boy, do these phones drain battery a lot! It seems that the drain is now so much worse for Apple users, no thanks to a new update for the Facebook app.

Several users have reported of massive battery drains on their Apple devices after installing the latest Facebook app update. They say that it happens even when they turn off the background app refresh.

Circa founder Matt Gilligan posted on Medium.com that the app "isn't 'sleeping' properly" and therefore continues to eat up his battery. He adds, "hat extraneous background usage, despite not providing any value to me at all, is keeping the app alive 2x longer than my actual usage."

The same sentiment was echoed by another blogger, Nick Heer, over at Pixel Envy.

As such, Facebook has started investigating the matter and found out that processes were being run after closing the app, with or without background app refresh.

Facebook is not about to just take this sitting down and has issued an official statement as to what they're doing to rectify the issue.

"We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We're looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon," a spokesperson tells TechCrunch.

Facebook, however, refuses to comment on some of the theories that users have forwarded for the battery drain. The theories go from the simple bug issue to the the outrageous audio hijacking. Whatever it is and whether Facebook will choose to reveal what has caused the obvious issue or not, users can now be assured that a fix is on its way.

Stay tuned for further updates.
