Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao 2 rematch fight news 2016: Boxing will become the sport it should be if second fight takes place

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are the two biggest names in boxing though the sideshows have added a bit of flavor each time these two fighters take the ring.

Mayweather retired back in September and Pacquiao could be following after his April 9 joust with Timothy Bradley Jr. It is a rubber match to settle the score though many still see Pacquiao as the winner of the previous two fights.

The upcoming fight has not received the same hype when compared to other Pacquiao matches, specifically that May 2015 showdown between him and Mayweather. Though that match left many disappointed, it stands as the penultimate showdown of his career.

Bear in mind that Pacquiao seems to be unsure if his third match with Bradley will be his last. He said that he would decide after the final bell. Trainer Freddie Roach believes that Pacquiao still has a lot left in him to fight on if he opts to continue.

But the thing here is the question of time. Despite receiving backlash for his opposition to same-sex marriages, Pacquiao is still in a good position to win a senatorial seat in the Philippine elections which take place on May 9.

That becomes another factor, considering that Pacquiao will be busy attending hearings and sessions compared to his current state right now.

Both Mayweather and Pacquiao have had their share of off-ring issues. Mayweather had his share of touching sensitive topics and has not been shy to air his piece. He has even served jail time at some point though that has been obviously forgotten.

For Pacquiao, his stance on same-sex marriage is the one that has hurt him the most. Though it could die down at some point, the fact remains is that he touched on the issue at probably the wrong point in time.

Could it be a page taken out of Mayweather's book? Some believe so. But the thing is on whether it was called for. It does go against his religious beliefs but the timing of revealing his stance was seen as something that will be regrettable.

If Pacquiao should retire after April 9, boxing may finally return to what it should be – a sport with less off-ring drama.
