Reports of Gionee preparing to launch a dual battery smartphone dubbed as M5 have been confirmed with the device being spotted on China's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Centre website (TENAA), the equivalent of the US FCC, along with its key specifications.

Just this week, a new official teaser of the Gionee M5 was released, showing a dual battery inside the upcoming smartphone, which will reportedly work with only one of the batteries, while the other is being charged. Gionee did not provide the size of the batteries, but promised that the M5 would come with a four-day battery life, which amounts to approximately two-day of heavy use. Both the predecessors of the Gionee M5, the Marathon M3 and the M2 packed a huge 5,000mAh and 4,200mAh battery, respectively.

TENNA's listing now confirms the existence of the Gionee M5 with a dual battery setup, and also provides additional specifications. Measuring 152x76x8.6mm, the Gionee M5 is listed as weighing 213 grams and featuring a 5.5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution AMOLED display. The listing shows the M5 handset is powered by an unspecified 1.3GHz quad-core processor, paired with 2GB of RAM. The Gionee M5 offers 16GB inbuilt storage, which can also be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. Gionee's dual battery smartphone sports an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box.

As per the listing on TENAA, the Gionee M5 has two 3,000mAh batteries, adding up to a mammoth combined capacity of 6,000mAh for the handset. With smartphone displays getting bigger and brighter, users have been plagued by battery problems, though Gionee appears to have found a solution with its dual battery design smartphone. At the moment, no other details are available about the Gionee M5, but more leaks and rumors can be expected ahead of its official confirmation and launch.
