Google Nexus 2016 release date, specs rumors: New Nexus devices coming in different variants; August release date likely?

The next Google Nexus device has not been confirmed but there have already been various rumors as to what the tech giant is cooking up.

Many believe that the release of the Google Nexus 2016 is imminent because of the drop in price of the Google Nexus 5X. Not only is Amazon offering the device at a lower price, but so are Daily Steals and eBay.

It remains to be seen what the device will be like but there are reports suggesting that Google will launch different versions of the Nexus lineup – one dubbed as the Nexus 2016 and believed to be a smartphone, and another dubbed as the Nexus 7 2016, which is believed to be a tablet.

Yibada initially reported that this year's Nexus devices will first come in two smartphone variants with HTC as the maker. Another version is believed to be the tablet, the Nexus 7 2016, which is expected to be a more improved version of the Nexus 6P. Huawei is believed to be the maker for this variant, which is also said to run a Snapdragon 820 chipset coupled with 4 GB of RAM.

Meanwhile, the smartphone is rumored to sport a 5-inch display while the other is said to have a 5.5-inch display. The device is also expected to offer 2 TB of external storage capacity with the help of a microSD slot. In addition, the phone is said to feature a 12-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel selfie shooter.

People were waiting for the Google Nexus 2016 to be showcased at the recently concluded Google I/O Conference, but to their disappointment, Google didn't introduce a new model.

Talks were more focused on the new Android operating system (OS) update, Android N, which is rumored to be available by August. With that said, the next Google Nexus is also said to be released alongside the new OS, which means the device will come pre-loaded with new software features.

If rumors about Android N releasing in August are true, it's also likely that Android fans will get to see a new Google Nexus in a couple of months.
