Honda Clarity news: Honda unveils fuel cell vehicle with a 435-mile driving range

Honda is looking to go head-to-head with the Toyota Mirai. During the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese automaker unveiled its new vehicle, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan.
It is the third-generation fuel cell vehicle for Honda after releasing the FCX hatchback in 2002 and the FCX Clarity in 2008. According to Honda, it has been researching and developing fuel cell technology since the late 1980s.
Honda announced via its press release, "With the goal to make a contribution to the forthcoming hydrogen energy society and to realize the joy and freedom of mobility and a sustainable society where people can enjoy life, Honda will continue taking on challenges in the area of hydrogen technologies."
The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan features a fuel cell stack that produces an output of 100 kW, which translates to 134 horsepower. The fuel cell stack is 33 percent smaller but provides 60 percent greater output density than the Honda FCX Clarity.
The fuel cell stack is accompanied by an electric motor that has a maximum output of 130 kW, which translates to 174 horsepower.
The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9 seconds.
According to Honda, the compact fuel cell stack, just about the same size as a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, is placed under the hood of the sedan. This specific powertrain layout translates to a spacious cabin. Given that the sedan is also longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, the cabin will be able to seat five adults comfortably.
The Honda Clarity also has a driving range 435 miles, more than the Toyota Mirai's 312-mile range. It is equipped with a high-pressure hydrogen storage tank that can be refueled in approximately three minutes.
Honda also calls the Clarity a "power plant on wheels." The sedan has the Power Exporter 9000 that enables the car to generate and provide electricity during power outages or in times of disaster.
The car comes in three colors options, Premium Brilliant Garnet Metallic, White Orchid Pearl and Crystal Black Pearl. Its interiors feature a Platinum Gray color theme.
The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan will be released to Japan in March 2016. It will be sold for about $63,630. It will first maintain a small-volume production and collect feedback from users. The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan will then be offered in the U.S. at a later date.
