With Google launching the Daydream virtual reality (VR) platform last month for mobile devices, it is likely to be used for several new smartphones due to arrive in the market over this year and the next. Among the Daydream-ready phones appearing this year will be a device from Huawei, and this bit of information was revealed recently by the CEO of its consumer division.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Richard Yu, who is the CEO of the Consumer Business Group in Huawei, stated that they were planning to bring out a Daydream-ready smartphone this year. With this particular statement from Yu, it became clear that Huawei was ready to follow other mobile manufacturers like Samsung and LG who have already released VR headsets that work with the aid of their smartphones.

However, the current smartphones that are used along with the VR headsets cannot be classified as Daydream-ready devices as they do not have the minimum specification outlined by Google. Instead, devices that are Daydream-ready are only expected to arrive sometime later this year after Google's Android N is released. Huawei, in particular, plans to release its Daydream-ready smartphone during the fall and it appears that it will arrive in the market with Android N.

More importantly, Android N forms of the base of the Daydream platform and when the phones created with it arrive later this year, VR headsets could also accompany them.

Google also unveiled plans for these VR headsets and motion controllers during its I/O conference last month and announced that it would be partnering with various companies. Huawei was mentioned as a partner, along with Samsung, ZTE, Alcatel, Asus, Xiaomi and LG, and these companies are also expected to release smartphones that are Daydream-ready.

Huawei has big plans to take on smartphone industry leaders like Samsung and Apple and overtake them. According to Yu's interview with the Wall Street Journal, Huawei is going to concentrate on improving the number of devices offered in the United States and it is likely that the upcoming Daydream-ready smartphone is going to be one of them.
