Huawei P8 release date: April 15 invite-only launch in London; more leaks surface
Chinese telecom firm Huawei is gearing up to unveil the Ascend P8 smartphone at a press conference in London on April 15. Images of Huawei's invitation for the event that have surfaced online do not contain much information, except for the company's logo and the bold words "It's coming."
Huawei has been widely-anticipated to release a successor to its Ascend P7, but drop the "Ascend" branding for its new high-end smartphone. The company had been expected to announce the P8 at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, but did not reveal anything about its upcoming smartphone at the event. But Huawei has been releasing teasers of the P8 in China, which has revealed some technical details about the upcoming smartphone, though they are yet to be officially confirmed by the company. The Huawei P8 could create a flutter in the highly competitive smartphone market following some major upgrades to its specs and features over its predecessor.
Rumors suggest that the Huawei P8 will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD 1080 x 1920 pixel screen with a pixel density of 424ppi and a 13MP OIS rear-facing camera. The smartphone will be powered by the company's home-grown 64-bit octa-core Kirin 930 CPU, with 3GB RAM, 32GB of onboard storage and a 2,600mAh battery. Rumors also indicate that the Huawei P8 will be just 6mm thin, which will make it 0.5mm thinner than its predecessor, and will feature a fingerprint scanner on the rear side. The Huawei P8 will be running Android 5.0 Lollipop with the company's native UI slapped on top.
Huawei P8 is rumored to be priced at $480 and will compete with other high-end smartphones, such as Sony Xperia Z3 and Moto X (2nd Gen). There are also rumors that Google is considering Huawei to build its Nexus 7 smartphone, which could be released this year.
