iPad Mini 3 vs iPad Air 2: these different sized premium devices offer different hardware

The iPad Mini 3 and the iPad Air 2 might have very few differences but for those looking for tablets these two from Apple are the among the very best on offer. Here is how the super thin Air 2 compares to the smaller Mini 3.

Design

When it comes to design both devices are similar as they are manufactured by Apple and so they have full aluminum bodies and rounded edges. They also come with the same color options in the form of silver, space gray and gold and each has a fingerprint scanner. However, the iPad Air 2 is much lighter slimmer at 6.1mm compared to the 7.5 mm of the Mini 3. Otherwise the iPad Air 2 is heavier, broader, and taller when compared to its smaller competitor.

Display

Both devices have LED-backlit IPS LCD screens but the iPad Mini 3 has a 7.9 inch version with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and a density of 324 pixels per inch, while the iPad Air 2 has a 9.7 inch version with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and density of 264 pixels per inch.

Specs

On the iPad Mini 3 is an Apple A7 chipset, a CPU with two cores clocked at 1.3 GHz and a PowerVR G6430 GPU while the iPad Air 2 has an Apple A8X chipset, and a CPU with three cores clocked at 1.5 GHz.

Memory

Like other devices from Apple, the iPad Mini 3 and the iPad Air 2 do not have memory slots and so users have to be content with the memory onboard. As for RAM, the smaller iPad Mini 3 comes with 1 GB while the bigger iPad Air 2 has 2 GB.

Camera

The iPad Air 2 has 8 megapixel camera at its rear and a 1.2 megapixel version at front while the iPad Mini 3 has a 5 megapixel and 1.2 megapixel camera respectively.

Price

The iPad Air 2 has a price tag of $500 while the iPad Mini 3 costs $400.
