iPhone 6S release date, specs, rumors: Apple's new Force Touch screen will bring some cool functions to next iPhone

News related to Apple's upcoming products continue to circulate around the Internet, especially with the launch of the new iPhone just months away. The last few weeks have seen various speculations about the specifications of the next-gen iPhone and the latest reports now claim that the new iPhone 6S will pack a new Force Touch screen, which will allow users to perform additional functions by applying pressure on the screen.

Following the release of the iPhone 6 towards the end of 2014, Apple has been widely expected to follow up with the launch of the next generation iPhone 7 about 12 months later. The company is also expected to update both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus this year.

Apple has been earlier speculated to incorporate its Force Touch technology in the iPhone 6S, which could be the product's biggest selling point. Apple's Force Touch technology senses and distinguishes between variable finger pressures and performs specific actions based on the amount of force applied by the user on the keypad. The technology uses a sensor inside the panel to allow devices to differentiate between light touches and hard presses. By allowing the devices to understand the difference between the various amounts of pressure applied, Force Touch opens up a whole new range of interactions.

The latest reports reveal that Apple is redesigning small parts of both its iOS as well as its own apps for Force Touch to make it suitable for the upcoming iPhone 6S. Apple's Force Touch technology on the upcoming iPhone 6S will be similar to the way it is being used in its new MacBooks. The "taptic feedback" system could allow iPhone 6S users to do away with the need to make more finicky gestures, like double tap and the tap-and-hold. For instance, using the Force Touch screen, iPhone 6S users will be able to press down on the display to drop new location pins in Apple Maps, or control scrolling within the iOS media players by applying more pressure on the screen.

Apple is reportedly developing new gestures for its upcoming iOS 9 and also encouraging app developers to come up with new methods for scrolling, highlighting and navigating through content. Apple could discuss the Force Touch features for the iPhone 6S at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, but is likely to unveil the next iPhone only a few months after that.
