iPhone 8 release date, specs rumors: 10th anniversary iPhone to feature OLED display

(Apple)Apple's iPhone 8 is rumored to sport a major overhaul in design and features.

Apple's iPhone 8 has been plagued by rumors even before the release of the iPhone 7. This is mostly because the 2017 iPhone 8 will mark the lineup's 10th anniversary. And for that, it means that the company may be working to make the iPhone 8 the best ever.

Some people were displeased when the iPhone 7 was unveiled because not much changed with the smartphone's major design or features, apart from the moderately received lack of a headphone jack. But the next iPhone is going to be a game changer, if predictions and supposed leaks are to be believed.

For one thing, the upcoming iPhone iteration is said to be named either the "iPhone 8" or "iPhone 10," to commemorate its 10th anniversary. This means Apple will be skipping the S version of the iPhone 7.

Design-wise, there has been talk of the iPhone 8 sporting an all-glass body with aluminum on its sides as support. However, there is also a rumor going around that stainless steel will be used for at least one of the iPhone 8 variants, of which there are speculated to be three. A 4.7-inch version, a 5-inch version, and a 5.5-inch version are all said to be coming in 2017. And while 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches are common with the lineup, a middle-ground 5-inch model is something new. However, there are other reports saying that it will be a higher-end 5.8-inch variant instead.

As for its display, Digital Spy reports that the iPhone 8 will feature an OLED display, which is a first in iPhone history. And while Apple has always gone with LCD screens, an OLED display is definitely far better. It should be noted that other brands have already adopted OLED displays in their lineups, like Samsung.

It is also expected that a huge redesign will be made on the next iPhone, with the screen taking up the entire front surface of the handheld device. This means edge-to-edge display on all four sides and a home button that is directly embedded within the screen. It was previously reported that the Cupertino-based tech giant had filed a patent for a new fingerprint sensor that can be fully integrated within the display.

Since Apple has yet to confirm if any of these are true, readers should take this news with a grain of salt for now.
