MacBook Air 2017 release date, rumors: Apple to discontinue lineup due to MacBook Pro 2016?

(Apple)Rumor has it that Apple will be discontinuing the MacBook Air lineup.

With a new MacBook Pro out, fans are wondering whether Apple's other laptop lineup will be getting a major upgrade in the near future. However, rumor has it that the Cupertino-based tech giant might be doing away with the MacBook Air for good.

Speculations were rife that Apple would be unveiling the MacBook Pro 2016 and the MacBook Air 2016 at the company's October event. However, only the MacBook Pro was brought out, leaving its lighter counterpart behind. The new MacBook Pro was reportedly compared to the current-gen MacBook Air, which led to somewhat shocking revelations.

According to reports, the MacBook Pro 2016 was overall smaller and thinner in size than the MacBook Air. Being bulkier and heavier than the MacBook Air was always one of the most distinguishable factors of the MacBook Pro. But with recent developments, it seems that this is no longer the case.

This has led to rumors that Apple might be discontinuing the MacBook Air lineup altogether. The MacBook Pro 2016 is more advanced and more portable, after all.

But there are also those who believe that a new MacBook Air will still see the light of day. And while it may not land within 2016, Apple could still launch it in the new year. It can be recalled that the most recent change the MacBook Air got this year was an optional RAM upgrade, which was unsatisfactory to say the least.

However, if a MacBook Air 2017 is really a possibility, then it is believed that Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, will come with the laptop. Apart from that, the new device is said to have a Retina display, Touch ID with Force Touch, and an E-Ink keyboard. Under the hood, the laptop may sport Intel's new Kaby Lake processor, ARM chips, and a more powerful battery. It has also been said that the MacBook Air 2017, if released, could be the company's cheapest offering.

Since nothing can be known for sure at this point, readers are advised to take this news with a grain of salt.
