Mazda MX-5 Miata RS news: Power-focused car launched for Japanese market

Mazda unveiled the 2016 MX-5 Miata earlier this year. The MX-5 is a gorgeous and speedy two-seat roadster that has been a hit with drivers. The U.S. MX-5 comes with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with automatic transmission. It provides 155 horsepower and takes 5.9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph.

Just last week, Mazda unveiled the newest member of the family, the MX-5 Miata RS. The performance-focused vehicle is expected to go on sale in Japan where it is known as the Mazda Roadster. The newest release doesn't differ too much from the U.S. MX-5 save for a number of performance upgrades.

The MX-5 Miata RS comes in a single color, which is called Crystal White Pearl Mica.

Some of the upgrades under the hood include Blistein shock dampers and front suspension tower brace that provides better car handling. The large-diameter disc brakes also give the roadster added stopping power. The retuned steering rack provides for sharper turn-in and an upgraded exhaust gives the roadster a better sound.

Inside, the interior looks classy with new heated Recaro seats with Nappa leather upholstery and the Alcantara trim. There is also a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

New to the vehicle are adaptive front lighting, high-beam control, lane departure and blind spot warning systems. Mazda also has an array of accessories for its new roadster including chassis braces, red-painted tow hooks, and a roll cage.

While many are disappointed that the new Miata roadster wont be coming to the U.S., drivers can take consolation in the fact that the MX-5 Miata RS features a smaller engine. It comes with a 1.5-liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission that provides 129 horsepower. The vehicle also comes with smaller wheels.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RS will be sold in Japan for the price of $26,900.

For those who want something similar, the Japan-only roadster shares very similar features with the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club Edition, which is sold for $28,665.
