Microsoft Surface Book 2 release date not until latter part of 2017

(Microsoft Store)It may be a while before the follow-up to 2015's Surface Book is finally released

New Surface devices may be arriving significantly later than previously expected and that includes the Surface Book 2.

Rumors from earlier this year have put forth different possible launch dates for the new laptop, and a significant number of them regarded October as a likely month for its arrival.

The October unveiling became a popular prediction largely because last year's Surface Book was launched during the same month, but it now appears the wait for the new device will be substantially longer.

Since most of the new Surface devices are widely expected to feature both the Redstone 2 OS as well as Intel's Kaby Lake processors, there was a growing belief that they would not be made available until next year at the earliest.

With the Redstone 2 OS expected to be released in the spring of next year, that timeframe also served as a possible launch window for the Surface Book 2 that people began to point to more, though that is apparently still a pretty optimistic projection for the new laptop and other Surface devices.

According to a new report from ZD Net's Mary Jo Foley, even though both the Redstone 2 OS and Intel's Kaby Lake processors are expected be made available early next year, Microsoft may still err on the side of caution this time around and opt to hold off on releasing any new devices that make use of the two components right away.

The report adds that the new Surface devices may be released closer to the 2017 holiday season as opposed to that aforementioned spring timeframe.

That's a long wait for a new laptop, and it's entirely possible that two years could pass between the unveilings of the two Surface Books.

Hopefully, that long wait will prove to be worth it and result in a Surface Book 2 that exceeds expectations and delivers tremendous value.
