Microsoft Surface Phone 2016 release date: Smartphone to be unveiled in October this year?

(Microsoft)The Microsoft Surface Phone 2016 is rumored to be released in October.

While there are rumors that a new Surface Phone is in the works, Microsoft never outright confirmed of such plans. However, that has not stopped the tech community from speculating — the most recent of which has to do with the smartphone's supposedly intended launch in October.

According to reports, there has been talk that Microsoft will unveil the Surface Phone 2016 at a technical event scheduled to take place in October. This certainly falls within the range of late 2016 to early 2017 that was previously reported as the device's release window. However, this is still a rumor and the company has yet to confirm the news.

But what about the specifications of the Surface Phone 2016? A report from Motoring Crunch states that a leak was recently spotted at a Weibo account belonging to a user named Nokibar. The supposed leak also came with images of the rumored smartphone from Microsoft, but it is still unclear if there is any truth to them.

According to rumors, however, the new Surface Phone is said to come in three different variants. Despite all being high-end smartphones, the first one is the entry-level device and will come with 3 or 4 GB of RAM. It will be packed with 32 GB of internal memory and will run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 821.

The second variation will reportedly come with 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Lastly, the third model is expected to arrive with 8 GB of RAM and a memory of 512 GB.

All three iterations will sport a case made from aluminum and magnesium material. A USB Type-C port and liquid cooling technology are also reportedly going to be on board. As for its operating system, there was some talk of the device running on Windows 10, but there are also others who claim that it may run on an Android OS instead.

Only time will tell if these rumors are true. For now, tech enthusiasts should take this news with a grain of salt.
