Mondaine Helvetica 1 smartwatch from Swiss watch maker offers something a little different

The new smartwatch from Mondaine is the Helvetica 1 and the Swiss-based watch maker wants to offer something different from other devices in the market including the dominating Apple Watch. Limited numbers of the device, which sells for $950, are on sale until September at a discount of $100.

There are several smartwatches that look like traditional watches but the Helvetica 1 is different as it has an analog watch face that cannot be changed like other devices. One benefit of this design is that the battery on the watch can last for two years, something which is not possible on smartwatches, as they usually have to be recharged daily. In addition, some displays like the one on the Apple Watch have to be switched off when not in use.

As for the design of the device, it comes with a round body crafted from stainless steel with a premium brushed finish. On its display is a Sapphire crystal coating which gives the device added protection from scratches. It is also set in a case measuring 44 mm in diameter.

As for the strap of the device, it has a 22 mm lug, which is attached to the body. The default strap is made of leather and there is no word yet as to whether it can be replaced with other similar-sized options available in the market.

What makes the device fall into the smartwatch category is that it has an activity and sleep tracker. There is also an additional smaller dial which shows rudimentary activity and sleep data. However, when the device is paired with either a smartphone running on Android 4.4 or iOS 8, additional information can be viewed by the user via an app.

Using the app, users will be able to track their steps and other information such as calories. There is also a Smart Sleep Alarm feature which can be used to wake the user when they are in a light sleep cycle. Finally, the device is also able to track sleep patterns when worn on the wrist or placed under the pillow the user is sleeping on.
