'Mortal Kombat X' news update: Developer Ed Boon teases legacy character Rain may be making a comeback

Earlier today, "Mortal Kombat X" developer Ed Boon posted an interesting comment on his official Twitter account. The post featured a poster of a Beatles tribute event to be held in Chicago later this month, which in itself is not really relevant to the recently released fighting game. What is significant, however, is that the event is titled 'Rain'. Although Boon did not clearly explain the idea behind his post, longtime "Mortal Kombat" fans immediately connected it to an old character in the game named Rain.

The character had first become playable in "Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3" and was later added to other games such as "Mortal Kombat Trilogy". Rain shares a similar look to "Mortal Kombat" mainstays Sub-Zero and Scorpion. His purple ninja outfit and element based powers distinguish him from the other ninjas in the game, including the aforementioned two characters and others like Reptile, Ermac, and Noob Saibot.

Through the years, Rain has been one of the more criticized characters in the "Mortal Kombat" franchise. With Sub-Zero and Scorpion serving as the series' most popular and enduring characters, the similar ninja archetype Rain attracted criticism. The game's fans considered Rain to be a poorly executed derivative and also made fun of the character's ordinary name.

Despite Rain's history, it appears that the current "Mortal Kombat" team has set its eyes upon creating an updated version of the character. The team recently released a DLC pack containing horror icon Jason Vorhees, and while future DLC contents have yet to be announced, Boon's recent tease indicates that Rain could be the next addition to the game.

Presently, source files within the game for Rain are already available, though the character itself remains unplayable. But Rain's official entry into the "Mortal Kombat X" universe doesn't appear to be too far away.
