Motorola has officially confirmed that the company has initiated a soak test for Android 5.1 for the Moto X (2013) in US and Latin America.

Motorola was the second OEM to release the Android 5.1 Lollipop update after it became available for Google's Nexus devices and it was believed that the company's other devices, including Moto X, Moto F, Moto Droid and Moto E, could be skipping the 5.0 update and would be instead directly updated to 5.1 Lollipop.

David Schuster, Motorola's Senior Director of Software Management, had recently stated on his Google account that most of the company's devices would skip the 5.0 update and instead jump directly to 5.1 Lollipop. According to David, the 2013 Moto X, the 2013 Moto G, the 4G Moto G and the Moto E would all be updated directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop instead of getting 5.0 first.

Android Lollipop 5.1 is said to bring a host of features, such as support for multiple SIM cards on devices with multiple slots and HD calling between compatible devices running Android 5.1 Lollipop. The software update also enhances device protection by locking the phone until the owner signs in with his or her Google account even in the case of a factory reset.

Earlier, there had been several reports of Brazil seeing Android 5.1 on the Moto X (2013), though it was unclear if it was a soak test or a full OTA rollout for the region. But screenshots posted on XDA developers forum had showed a Brazilian Moto X 2013 running what appeared to be the official Android 5.1 OTA rollout and not merely a soak test.

David Schuster has now confirmed in a Goolge post that the company has initiated a soak test for Android 5.1 for the Moto X (2013) in US and Latin America, following a delay due to lack of support from some of Motorola's partners. Before running the soak test for the Moto X (2013), Motorola also had to fix some hardware issues, as the first-gen Moto X is powered by an outdated dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

Motorola has not provided a detailed timeline about when it will push the final update to the masses, but if everything goes according to plan, the update should start hitting all Moto X (2013) devices over the coming weeks.
