By virtue of having the number 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, intriguing young players and significant cap space, the Los Angeles Lakers are viewed as a team that could do big things this offseason.

Specifically, recent rumors have linked them to potential trades which could bring in players who could finally reverse the trend of poor play that has persisted over the past few seasons.

Recently, Bleacher Report's Dan Favale thought up a possible trade that could address the Lakers' pressing needs to get better immediately, while also allowing them to stay competitive over a sustained period of time.

The trade, as outlined by Favale, has the Lakers sending promising young point guard D'Angelo Russell and this year's number 2 overall pick in the NBA draft to the Utah Jazz in exchange for frontcourt players Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward.

In essence, the trade would involve the Lakers sending a pair of number 2 overall picks, Russell was the second overall selection in last year's draft, to the Jazz in exchange for players in their prime who are still young enough to serve as foundational pieces of the franchise's next great squad.

The trade can be intriguing to both squads for a few reasons.

First off, for the Lakers, the trade not only allows them to fill in some lineup holes, it also allows them to hand over the full-time point guard duties to Jordan Clarkson, eliminating a potential logjam in the process.

Hayward and Favors can also take on defined roles within the team, with the former acting as the primary scorer and secondary ball-handler while the latter slides into the role of rim protector and potentially devastating roll man.

As Favale also noted, adding Hayward and Favors may not immediately turn the Lakers into title contenders, but they will mostly likely contribute to a quicker turnaround and perhaps even a playoff appearance.

Furthermore, the Lakers may even be in a better position to bolster their roster further via free agency after this potential trade, allowing them to field a team that could be good next season and even better in the years ahead.

For the Jazz, the trade makes sense because it gives them more stability at the point guard position, the lack of which was harmful to their playoff aspirations this past season.

Trading away Hayward and Favors also frees up more playing time for intriguing wing prospects Rodney Hood and Trey Lyles while also clearing out the paint even more for rim-protecting stalwart Rudy Gobert.

Plus, the number 2 overall pick can also give the Jazz another talented player, and one who may turn into the franchise cornerstone they have lacked for some time now.

It's a potentially rewarding proposal for both the Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Lakers and one that could be well worth exploring for two teams looking to improve heading into next season.
