New York Jets roster news 2016: Ryan Fitzpatrick settles for 1-year, $12 million pact

(Reuters/Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports)Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is staying with the New York Jets after agreeing to a one-year deal.

Finally, the contract drama between the New York Jets and main quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is over as both sides agreed Wednesday to a one-year deal which is worth $12 million.

For months, the Jets' contract issue with Fitzpatrick was one of the hot topics in the National Football League (NFL) this off-season.

New York's initial offer was a three-year, $24 million contract ($16 million guaranteed) which was never considered by Fitzpatrick.

Because there was no progress in the contract talks for such a long time, there were even times when the Jets seemed hopeless, already seeking on the market for available passers who they can bring in.

But now, all of those are things of the past and Fitzpatrick is returning for another season.

Despite all the absences Fitzpatrick had when the dispute was ongoing, he is still expected to be the starting quarterback when the Jets open their new campaign.

Last season, Fitzpatrick played one of the best years of his NFL career even if New York missed the playoffs.

In 16 games, Fitzpatrick recorded 335 completions for 3,905 yards and 31 touchdowns, but also throwing 15 interceptions. The total number of passing yards and touchdowns are so far career-bests for the 33-year-old.

Fitzpatrick's splendid showing in the 2015 season guided the Jets to a winning record of 10-6. They may have failed to reach the postseason for the fifth consecutive year but it was their first true winning record since the 2010 season.

Now that the Fitzpatrick contract problem is resolved, the Jets can focus in training camp and start screening players who will be part of the final 53-man roster.

The Jets are aiming to build a contending squad that could bring the franchise back to the playoffs. The last time New York graced the postseason was in the 2010 season where it reached the conference championship before being eliminated by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
