New York Jets trade, free agency rumors 2016: Team owner Woody Johnson calling for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to return

The contract drama continues for the New York Jets and free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now, team owner Woody Johnson joins the show by recently asking their starting quarterback for last season to re-sign with them.

Since the free agency period began on March 9, the Jets are trying to reach a deal with Fitzpatrick but they have not achieved any success so far. According to previous reports, the veteran passer's salary demands are way too high.

This urged Johnson to get involved, and during the recent National Football League (NFL) owners meeting, he said to Fitzpatrick, "Come back to the Jets."

Johnson then added that he is hoping the 33-year-old decides to stay following a great outing in the 2015 season, also praising the latter as a person.

It was indeed a splendid season for Fitzpatrick during their last campaign. The former seventh-round draft pick started in all 16 games, completing 335-of-562 passes for 3,905 yards and 31 touchdowns, also throwing 15 interceptions. Fitzpatrick's total passing yards and touchdown passes (also a franchise record) last season are career-bests for him.

Despite Fitzpatrick's success, the playoff drought continued for New York in the 2015 season as it finished second in the American Football Conference (AFC) East with a 10-6 record. It was the fifth consecutive year the franchise failed to see postseason action.

While Johnson is requesting Fitzpatrick to stay, Jets head coach Todd Bowles seems okay if he does not come back. According to ESPN, Bowles is confident with his "contigency plan" and also believes in their former starting quarterback Geno Smith.

Bowles added that re-signing Fitzpatrick is something the Jets are working on but if that is not accomplished, they already have plans.

Because of their contract issue with Fitzpatrick, the Jets were not eliminated from the group of teams currently linked to the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick, who is rumored to be traded.
