Nexus 5 Android 5.1 Lollipop update: More users receiving update; Nexus 4, 7, 9 next, confirms Google

Google Inc. has confirmed that the LG-made Nexus 4 smartphone released back in November 2012 will be getting the Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA update. This marks the fifth Android version to reach the LG Nexus 4 smartphone launched back in October 2012 with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board.

Google had released Android 5.0 Lollipop in November 2014 with a full revamp of the UI and various new features. But a number of bugs soon appeared due to the update, particularly a "memory leak bug" causing apps to freeze, crash and reboot, demanding the company's attention.

In March, Google announced the release of Android 5.1 Lollipop with some important features, such as support for multiple SIM cards on devices with multiple slots and HD calling between compatible devices running Android 5.1 Lollipop. The software update also enhances device protection by locking the phone until the owner signs in with his or her Google account even in the case of a factory reset.

After updating the Nexus 4 to Android 5.0 Lollipop back in November 2014, Google has now begun sending Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA updates to Nexus 4 owners. Installing the 5.1 Lollipop update will upgrade the Nexus 4 from build number LRX22C to LMY47O.

Despite all its features, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update has failed to resolve the memory leak bug in Android 5.0 Lollipop. There have been reports of Android 5.1.1 (API 22) being already in the works, as a reference to the new build has been spotted in the Android SDK manager that is used by Android developers to manage apps.

With Nexus 5 users receiving their Android 5.0 Lollipop update over the air, Google is now scheduled to begin Android 5.1 updates for the Nexus 9, Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 7 (cellular), and Nexus 4. Google has confirmed that it will release the updates for all the four devices, but has not provided any specific time frame or announced whether they will receive Android 5.1 or Android 5.1.1.
