A Game Crate video interview featuring Hello Games founder Sean Murray revealed the origins of the upcoming 'No Man's Sky' video game. Murray noted that he drew inspiration from childhood concepts drawn from other video games such as 'Elite' and various science fiction novels he has read.

Murray spoke extensively about their goal of creating a game world that will offer an extraordinary amount of exploration and followed it up by discussing the technological challenges that arose out of that idea. He added that players should have an almost unlimited ability to explore the 'No Man's Sky' universe thus providing a vastly different gameplay experience compared to other video games.

'No Man's Sky' will allow players to travel to different planets across a fictional universe. They will upgrade their spacecraft, equipment, and tools along the way as they fight hostiles they come across whilst exploring.

In other news, Grant Duncan, the Art Director of 'No Man's Sky', will be conducting a series of talks at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. His first scheduled presentation will be Monday, March 2 at 3 PM where he will talk about procedural technology and how it is used to create the infinite worlds in the 'No Man's Sky' game world.

Duncan's second talk is scheduled on Thursday, March 5 at 5:30 PM where he will talk about how their team at Hello Games conceptualizes and creates the artwork in 'No Man's Sky'. A variety of images from the game will be showcased to panel attendees and it will be accompanied by a step by step walkthrough of the game's art processes.

From a blog post at the official Hello Games web site, "[Grant] will be showing some glimpses of the technology we've developed to produce procedural places, creatures and vegetation, and give you an idea of how he came to love letting a computer decide how his game should look (this was not easy), and how we all work together."

'No Man's Sky is slated for release sometime this year. An exact date has yet to be revealed, though recent rumors online suggest an August release.
