Nokia 6 specs news, release date: Nokia launches Android smartphone with HMD Global

(Facebook/nokia)Nokia has partnered with HMD Global to release a smartphone, Nokia 6, in China.

After a slew of unsuccessful attempts at producing smartphones, Nokia has finally launched the Nokia 6. This time, however, the brand has utilized an Android operating system instead of its previous choice to run on Windows.

Nokia has partnered with HMD Global to produce the smartphone, which features a simple monoblock design. Made from aluminum, the Nokia 6 sports a 5.5-inch 2.5D Gorilla Glass display with a 1,920 x 1,080 scree resolution. Under the hood, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 — not the latest in chipsets, but understandable considering the device's price range.

In terms of memory, the Nokia 6 carries 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in storage. There is also a microSD slot for additional memory. Apart from that, the handheld features a 3,000 mAh battery, a 16-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter, and a Dolby Atmos sound processor.

The Nokia 6 already launched in China and is set to retail for 1699 yuan, or approximately $245. HMD Global has stated that the smartphone will go on sale soon, in early 2017. The company's decision to launch in China is one founded on logic and good reasoning, reports Forbes, since the Chinese tech market is more open to accept newer smartphones than the Western front. This is, after all, Nokia's attempt at re-establishing its brand name and the publication points out that this will be easier done in a relatively young market than one that's already fully formed. If this is successful, Nokia will have carved a chunk of the market share for them, and may set up future opportunities to break into the Western market once again.

It remains to be seen if Nokia's effort to become relevant in the tech industry again will pay off. However, for a company that once ruled the market, it will be definitely interesting to see them try.

The Nokia 6 does not have an exact release date yet, although it is predicted that it may roll out in February.
