OnePlus 3 release date news: Employees reveal phone's release won't be this year

With the OnePlus 2 rolling out soon and it lacking some features that smartphone users want in their mobile device, consumers who have chalked up the OnePlus are deciding to wait for the next iteration instead of jumping the gun. But when exactly is OnePlus 3 coming out?

USA Today sat down with OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei, to talk about his relatively young company. One of the things that were discussed is the Chinese company's plan for a third phone. The 25-year-old said that they are indeed looking at releasing another phone this year, probably during the holidays.

"There's going to be a second phone this year, before the end of the year. Hopefully for Christmas. It may or may not be (higher spec'd than the OnePlus 2). When I saw the prototype for that phone I was like 'holy s--- that's going to be my daily driver' but then when the OnePlus 2 production version came out it's also super nice, so it's really hard to decide now what to use. It's going to be amazing, but today I'm not going to talk about it," said Pei.

And because what is currently out now from the company are OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, it is easy to assume that this third phone might be OnePlus 3. However, four employees from the company — David, Michael, Cat and Eric — debunked that theory during a recent Reddit AMA.

They confirmed that the company is indeed working on a third phone but said, "that this is not going to be the OnePlus 3 nor a OnePlus 2S." This means that the third OnePlus may not see its launch before the year ends.

OnePlus 2 will be hitting stores this Aug. 11 and is the anticipated follow-up to 2014's OnePlus One. Some tech insiders and smartphone enthusiasts, however, criticized the upcoming phone for lacking NFC, as well as Qualcomm's Quick Charging 2.0.
