Oppo R7 and R7 Plus launched in Beijing; will take on Samsung and Apple

At a special event held in Beijing, China to celebrate its 10 year anniversary, Oppo announced two new devices, the Oppo R7 which is a 5-inch smartphone, and the R7 Plus, a 6-inch phablet. Chinese electronics vendor Oppo is known for its unique designs and cutting-edge features, with its devices including the 4.8 mm-thick Oppo R5 or swiveling-camera Oppo N3.

Earlier leaked images and spy shots of the Oppo R7 had shown the smartphone with a metallic frame, thin profile and bezel-less display, indicating that it could be a high-end offering and a successor to the Find 7 that was released a little over a year ago by the company. However, the recent listing of the Oppo R7 on the website of third-party online retailer, JD.com had revealed that none of this was true, though the device did pack some impressive specifications.

The Oppo R7 features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS display offering 441ppi pixel density and a brushed metal cover on the rear side. The smartphone is powered by a 64-bit class Snapdragon 615 Octa-core SoC (System on Chip), paired with 3GB of RAM. The Oppo R7 will offer 16GB of inbuilt storage, 3G; 4G; dual-SIM, and dual standby support. The Android 5.0 Lollipop-based smartphone will sport a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The Oppo R7 packs a 2320mAh battery with support for the company's VOOC quick charge that can charge a battery to 75 percent in just 30 minutes.

The Oppo R7 Plus phablet features a 6-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D curved technology, and the same brushed metal design in the rear. The phablet is also powered by the same Qualcomm 64-bit class Snapdragon 615 Octa-core processor, paired with 3GB of RAM. The Oppo R7 Plus offers 32GB of storage and packs a 4,100mAh battery with the company's VOOC fast charging. The phablet also sports a fingerprint sensor on the front, 4G connectivity and a new laser auto-focus camera with an RGBW sensor for 32% brighter images.

Both the Oppo R7 and Oppo R7 Plus will be available in gold and silver options, and have gone on sale in China for about $400 and $480, respectively, while their global rollout will begin in June.
