Sony's press event at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) showcased many games but a large amount of attention was focused on the upcoming PlayStation VR headset. More importantly, the company announced the release date for the headset is due to happen on October 13, and soon after, pre-orders for it went live.

CNET states that the PlayStation virtual reality headset is going to arrive on October 13 with about 50 games. Among these fifty games that are going to be available at launch, the pricing for some of them has already been revealed. However, most of the attention is being focused on the PlayStation VR itself, the price tag for which was revealed earlier in the year. More importantly, the $399 price tag when it was announced raised a few eyebrows as it is much cheaper than other VR headsets in the market such as the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. The Oculus Rift comes with a price tag of $599 while the HTC Vive is priced at $799.

This affordable price of the PlayStation VR compared to other pricy headsets is expected to bring in a lot more customers for the device. Sony also seemed to hint that when the headset releases, it expects to face a lot of demand for it and therefore its supply chain might not be able to keep up with demand. This is expected to result in shortages of the PlayStation VR but the company is going to try and ensure that all customers are satisfied.

However, even as Sony was outlining how the demand for the VR headset would outstrip the production, analysts were hinting that it will not be able to keep up with competitors like the Vive and Rift. More importantly, the Vive and Rift require computers to operate and the PlayStation VR is going to rely on the PS4, which is going to severely constrain the graphics on it.

Meanwhile, pre-orders for the PlayStation VR have already gone live along with games. Among the games that are currently available for the device are "Tumble VR" and "Rigs Mechanized Combat League."
