Samsung Electronics' upcoming Galaxy Note 4, its next-generation version flagship smartphone/phablet series, is rumored to be the first to feature a new three-sided flexible display. Its name for this cool feature is "Youm."

The three-sided Youm flexible OLED display will allow the Galaxy Note 4 to use the left and right sides of the screen to show notifications for calls, emails and other functions. It will also enable users to controls apps, and to lock or unlock their phones. Youm should allow the use of virtual buttons that will make it easier to tab through files or pictures sorted alphabetically or by year.

Samsung first unveiled a prototype of a smartphone with the three-sided Youm display last year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. OLED or Organic Light-Emitting Diode is a technology that allows the creation "bendable" digital displays for smartphones and TVs. Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of OLEDs.

A report from the South Korean unit of business technology website ZDNet also points to rumors that the new Galaxy Note 4 display will be three-sided. Rumors of the Galaxy Note 4 Youm display followed a recent revelation by Hankil Yoon, a Samsung senior vice president, that the Galaxy Note 4 will come with a new form factor.

Samsung has filed a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a wraparound screen similar to the concept of a three-sided Youm display.

The Youm display on Galaxy Note 4 is slated to be a "2K" display, making the Note 4 the first Samsung phone with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

The upcoming smartphone could be powered by a Samsung-made Exynos processor with six cores or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU with 4 GB RAM. It could have the Android 4.5 operating system; 128 GB of internal memory; 4G network support and dual-band Wi-Fi.

The Galaxy Note 4 could come with a 20.7 megapixel rear camera with 4K video-recording capability and optical image stabilization technology. The phone is expected to be water- and dust-proof. Other rumored features include an improved battery with a capacity between 3600 mAh and 3800 mAh.

Samsung traditionally launches its Galaxy Notes in the second half of the year, which means the Galaxy Note 4 could about three to four months away.
