Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date Aug. 2: Why the name change?

(Samsung)The follow-up to the Galaxy Note 5 (shown), the Galaxy Note 7, will be unveiled August 2.

It's official. Samsung has now confirmed that the long-awaited Galaxy Note 7 is indeed on its way and is set to be officially unveiled on August 2.

The company broke the news themselves via a post on their official web site.

Samsung also took some time to confirm some important details related to the new phablet within that post.

For instance, while it's been known for quite some time now that the new phablet would be given the Note 7 name as opposed to the previously expected Note 6, the official reasons for why such a name change was taking place were not made available previously.

Samsung has now shed more light on the matter, and according to the company, the name change has taken place in part so that they could both unify their product offerings while also eliminating any confusion that may have emerged as a result of a Note 6 coming out within the same year that they also made the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge available.

By opting to name the new phablet as the Galaxy Note 7, it can now stand alongside the previously released Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge more easily.

Samsung didn't reveal much else about the new phablet's specs, though earlier leaks can attempt to fill in some of those blanks.

Not too long ago, the new phablet apparently popped up on the AnTuTu benchmarking web site, and thanks to that, some of the device's possible specs were revealed.

An image was also shown on Mysmartprice.com which contained the new phablet's specs, at least as they appeared on the benchmarking site, and it indicated that the Note 7 will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor as well as the Android Marshmallow OS.

The image also shows that the new phablet will come equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera as well as a front-facing shooter that offers five megapixels.

Lastly, the image also reveals that the Note 7 will come with 4GB of RAM onboard as well as 64GB of internal storage.

People should have a better idea of what the Galaxy Note 7 will feature very soon, since that August 2 unveiling is now just a few weeks away.
