San Antonio Spurs free agency, trade rumors 2016: Matt Bonner ready for the worst next season

A familiar face may no longer be returning to the San Antonio Spurs with center Matt Bonner not expecting to get re-signed as he remains available on the free agency market.

Bonner began his career with the Toronto Raptors, who he played his first two National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons with. In June 2006, the Raptors shipped him to San Antonio, and since then, he has been with the franchise.

With the Spurs, Bonner won two championships in 2007 and 2014. In Alamo City, the 36-year-old was an efficient reserve. Shooting was one of his strengths and this made him an offensive weapon in head coach Gregg Popovich's arsenal because this gave the team chances to space the floor for better scoring opportunities.

Unfortunately, the arrival of younger frontcourt players in the past few years limited Bonner's minutes. Last season, in only 30 games played (two starts), he averaged career-lows 2.5 points in 6.9 minutes of action per contest.

Now, the chances of Bonner being granted a new pact just got worse because the Spurs added another celebrated big man in Pau Gasol this free agency.

Because of all these, Bonner is pessimistic regarding the continuation of his career in San Antonio.

"Unless something changes going into the season, I'm probably not going to be with the Spurs," Bonner told Concord News Radio.

Despite Bonner's contributions, it is indeed unlikely for the Spurs to sign him, especially now that they have Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge to lead the frontcourt. Along with the two, Kyle Anderson and Dewayne Dedmon are also on the roster. In short, the organization no longer needs his services moving forward, although he remains hopeful that he can still be a Spur perhaps until the end of his career. If he fails to do so, then he might need to test the free agency waters.
