San Francisco 49ers roster rumors 2016: Colin Kaepernick's experience advantage in QB competition?

(Reuters/Mike DiNovo/USA TODAY Sports)Colin Kaepernick (right) has a strong chance of again taking the starting job at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Colin Kaepernick went from trade piece to a possible starting quarterback as he continues to impress in training camp while competing with Blaine Gabbert.

In the San Francisco 49ers' previous campaign, the starting job slipped from Kaepernick's grasp because he failed to help them win. Along with this, injuries ended his 2015 season early as he only saw action in nine games (eight starts). In those appearances, he recorded 144 completions for 1,615 yards and six touchdowns, also throwing five interceptions. Those numbers are a bit distant from his previous three seasons in San Francisco.

With Gabbert remaining the 49ers' starting passer until the season concluded, some thought it was time for them to part ways with Kaepernick. And there were a few moments when that almost happened this off-season, particularly when the 28-year-old had a meeting with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Denver Broncos.

But as Kaepernick recovered from all the health setbacks and participated in training camp, he went toe-to-toe with Gabbert.

In a report by Today's Pigskin, it was mentioned that perhaps Kaepernick's experience gives him a leg up in the ongoing quarterback competition. He is also expected to fit well in the system of San Francisco's new head coach Chip Kelly.

As of the moment, the 49ers and Kelly are yet to name who will start for them in the 2016 season, although last Tuesday, an unofficial depth chart for San Francisco showed Kaepernick and Gabbert both as starters.

This is great for Kaepernick who was a frequent subject in trade talks during the regular season and earlier in the off-season because of his diminished performance. It looks like he found a way to bounce back and is now contending to reclaim a role he had with the 49ers since his third season in the National Football League (NFL).
