Facebook Messenger: Installing separate app required for chat, voice calls

Facebook is now requiring users to download a standalone messaging app to be able to access the chat feature of the largest social network in the world.

All Facebook users will eventually have to download what is called Facebook Messenger App in order to continue using its messaging capabilities.

At the onset of this compulsory migration to a new app, countless backlash plagued the Internet.

A user named Katherine Spears took her grievances to the review section of Google Play saying, "Received a chat that I can't see because I'm forced to download this app. I can't bypass it. So while trying to install it multiple times, it stops at 91%. It won't even install!!! Apps should be optional. There was nothing wrong with the way chat worked before. I am very close to closing out my Facebook account!!"

But, there is a bigger predicament surrounding this issue compared to functionality – security.

Many have expressed their concern over "seemingly draconian permissions required for users of the Android version of the app," to quote another user on the Google Play Store.

Facebook may have anticipated the security issue and posted an official statement, asking, "Why is the Messenger app requesting permission to access features my Android phone or tablet?"

"If you install the Messenger app, you should see a screen letting you know that the app is asking for your permission to access information or use features from your Android phone or tablet. Almost all apps need certain permissions to run on Android, and we use these permissions to run features in the app. Keep in mind that Android controls the way the permissions are named, and the way they're named doesn't necessarily reflect the way the Messenger app and other apps use them."

Reuters reported in April that Mark Zuckerberg's social media empire will require a separate mobile app for messages, which also has the ability to make voice phone calls.

It has finally come to pass, and everyone are now forced to download the app unless they can forgo of using Facebook as a chat tool.
