Sony has always been prompt in releasing the latest Android Lollipop update to most of its Xperia Z smartphones. Users of Sony's newer smartphones have been enjoying the latest Lollipop version for quite some time now, though there have been doubts that the older Xperia Z smartphones would remain outdated. However, an image has showed up on the Japanese company's community website Xperia blog featuring the original Xperia Z running Android 5.0.2, which indicates that Sony is keen on upgrading its older variant as well.

The screenshot on Xperia blog shows Xperia Z (C6603) smartphone model running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS and the build number of the software as "10.6.A.0", which is in line with Xperia Z's last update number 10.5.1.A.0, thus lending credence to the image. The Android Lollipop upgrade to the Xperia Z will bring about a number of prominent enhancements, both in terms of visual display and performance. Users of the original Sony Xperia Z will be able to enjoy a sleek and plain Material Design view, see notification cards on the lock screen of their device and respond accordingly, with an added customization feature. The Android Lollipop upgrade will result in better battery management for the Xperia Z by improving the battery saver feature, and also enhance the overall security of the device. Following the Android Lollipop upgrade, users of the original Sony Xperia Z will benefit from multiple user device sharing, improved network handoff connectivity and the OK Google feature, which allows devices to be controlled using voice-based commands.

Until now, Sony has released the Android Lollipop upgrade for Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, Z Ultra GPE (Google Play Edition), Xperia C3, and T2 Ultra. Sony now plans to release the new Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS software for its other models as well, including Xperia ZR, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z3v and Xperia Tablet Z.
