Sony Xperia Z5 release date, specs and rumors: BRAVIA TV-inspired aesthetic design for next handset

(Reuters)

Sony's next flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z5, will reportedly feature a new aesthetic design inspired by its recent BRAVIA television sets. According to earlier rumors, Sony plans to launch the Xperia Z5, along with the Xperia Z5 Ultra and the Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones. The Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Ultra are believed to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, while details of the Xperia Z5 Compact are unavailable.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra will reportedly ditch the flagship standard fingerprint scanning feature and instead use Qualcomm's Ultrasonic Sense ID, making it the first smartphone in the Xperia series to feature the technology. The Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Ultra will reportedly feature a Quad HD display for all regions. The Xperia Z5 will come with a 2K screen, 4 GB of RAM, a brand new camera sensor and software, thoughit is unlikely to feature OIS (optical image stabilization).

Sony has been using the Omni-Balance design for its flagship devices for nearly five generations now, but this time, the Japanese company will reportedly opt for a new design language for its Xperia Z5. Sony's new aesthetic design for the Xperia Z5 has reportedly been inspired by its recent BRAVIA television sets, and the handset will sport a completely clean front end with a frosted glass effect. Sony will also shift its iconic logo to the side of the handset so that no branding is visible on the front. The handset will have thicker sides as compared to the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z4, similar to the earlier Sony Ericsson devices.

Sony is rumored to launch the Xperia Z5 in Q4 2015, though some reports have suggested that the launch could be postponed to January 2016 if the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset is not available in time for the release of the Z5-series.
