Microsoft Surface Book 2 release date in October; Instagram post sparks speculations

(Microsoft)A recent photo posted on the official Instagram account of Microsoft Surface has spurred speculations of a Surface Book 2, the successor of the Surface Book (pictured).

The latest buzz in the tech community has to do with Microsoft's alleged follow-up to its first Surface Book. Owing to an Instagram post from the official account of the Surface lineup, rumors have begun to surround the existence of the device. Despite no confirmation from the company, it is expected that the Surface Book 2 will drop in either October or spring 2017.

The Instagram post shows a part of the keyboard and display of a Surface Book, the model or edition of which is uncertain. The color seems to be black, which raised many speculations that the image could really be of the next generation of the Surface Book. It should be noted that the current generation is silver.

Microsoft did not indicate or hint at what model or iteration the device is, simply captioning the photo with a teaser of sorts: "Your key to success."

The photo has sparked a debate on the online tech world about whether the image is of the current Surface Book or the next iteration. According to Digital Trends, Windows blogger Rudy Huyn is adamant that the image is actually of the current generation of the lineup. Huyn observed the similarities of the photo with promo images released of the first Surface Book. The blogger posited that the image could have just been rotated and cropped in a creative way and even provided a visual.

However, there are other reports that claim that the image is of the rumored Surface Book 2, pointing out that the images only seem identical but actually differ when one looks close enough. There are apparently fewer ridges on the hinge of the photo posted on Instagram, while the Surface Book has a lot more. This could be attributed to the rumor that the next generation of the device has improved its hinge so that the laptop may be folded with a smaller gap.

Since Microsoft has yet to speak up on the matter, tech enthusiasts should take this news with a grain of salt for now.
