"Switched at Birth" creator, producer and writer Lizzy Weiss expressed on Twitter the difficulty she's going through in looking for the perfect title for season 5's fifth episode. She tweeted "Episode 5 is still unnamed because I cannot decide on it: hardest episode title to date. Will explain why when it is revealed what it is."

Season 4 ended with a 10-month time jump with Daphne and Bay still in China, where they were supposed to have stayed for only a six-week vacation. Weiss explained that the jump was deliberately incorporated in the cliffhanger "so that, if we were lucky enough to come back, we'd have something to jump off of," in an interview with TV Line. "We do, with time, want to shift some things around. We might even jump a little more, we'll see," she added.

In another interview, Weiss shared that 10 months make it possible for Bay to learn Mandarin and become a tattoo artist and for Daphne to work at a clinic. In the same interview with The Wrap, she talked about Craig's appearance and how it was "unexpected for John and Kathryn in the moment."

The last scene showed a phone call asking the two girls to "come home." A lot of speculations surround the reason behind the urgency in that phone call. Talks about a Kathryn-John divorce have surfaced as well as John dying since he was shown having a heart condition in the previous season.

The first four episodes are titled "The Call," "This Has to Do with Me," "Surprise" and "Relation of Lines and Colors," which Weiss has been sharing in her social media account. Viewers can only guess which of the subplots in the previous will have loose ends tied when the season premieres in April.

In addition, Weiss also tweeted "Episode 5 is possibly our most ambitious and outside the box episode of 'Switched at Birth' to date. I hope to break the news this week."
